Crop and cropping system-wise recommendations for manganese application
Recommended doses of Mn application in different crops and cropping systems are
given in Table 12.
Table 12. Crop and cropping system-wise recommendations for Mn application
Crop/ Cropping System Soil and crop based recommendations
Wheat Treat wheat seeds with MnO (25% Mn) or MnCl 2(25%
Mn) slurry at the rate of 10 ml slurry per kg seed.
Soybean In soybean grown in red and black soils, apply 25 kg
-1
MnSO 4 ha as basal dose.
-1
Soybean-Wheat In red and black soils, apply 30-50 kg MnSO 4 ha as basal
dose to soybean crop only.
-1
Rice-wheat Apply 50 kg MnSO 4 ha as basal dose to wheat crop only
or
3-4 foliar sprays of 0.5-1.0% MnSO 4 in each crop.
Groundnut In light textured soils, treat groundnut seeds with MnO
(25% Mn) or MnCl 2 (25% Mn) at 12 ml per kg seed.
Green gram/ Black gram In sandy loam soils, seed treatment with 2% MnSO 4or
foliar spray of 1.0% MnSO 4 is beneficial.
-1
Onion Apply 40 kg MnSO 4 ha as basal dose.
Tips for manganese management in crops
In soils with low organic matters where permeability is very high, Mn deficiency is
increasing rampantly.
Three to four foliar application of MnSO 4 (0.5-1.0%) has proved to be better than its basal
application in amending the Mn deficiency in soils.
To get higher yield of wheat in Mn deficient soils, one foliar application of MnSO 4 before
first irrigation followed by another two foliar applications after first irrigation is
recommended.
5. Recommendations for copper application
Sources of copper
Though copper is sufficient in most of the soils however, its deficiency can be amended by
using following fertilizer sources (Table 13).
Table 13. Common sources of copper and their content
Source Cu content (%)
Copper sulphate 24.0
Recommendations for Cu application based on its availability in soil
Based on Cu status in soils, they can be classified into six categories and correspondingly
suitable recommendation measures are given in Table 14.
