system in black soils
Maize 20 kg sulphur / ha at the time of sowing in medium black soil
Rice-wheat 45 kg sulphur / ha per each cropping system
Oil seed crops 1. 40-45 kg Sulphur/ha for each oil seed crop. This amount is
sufficient for one cropping system.
2. Apply 40 kg Sulphur/ ha for rapeseed and mustard crop grown in
deep black and alluvial soils.
3. 20 kg sulphur / ha at the time of sowing for rapeseed and mustard
crop grown in shallow black soil
Pulse crops 40 kg sulphur / ha for gram, pea, pigeon pea etc. and 20 kg
sulphur/ha for lentil, green gram and black gram crop
Pigeon pea 20 kg sulphur / ha in medium black soil
Sugarcane 80 kg sulphur / ha at the time of planting of crop in CaCO 3

2. 20 kg Sulphur / ha at the time of seed sowing in medium black
and shallow black soils
Other cropping 20 kg sulphur/ ha at the time of sowing in first crop of each
systems cropping system of rice-mustard-green gram, rice-sesamum-green
gram, groundnut-mustard, cotton-groundnut and groundnut-potato
Tips for sulphur management in crops
The sulfur requirement of crop varies from is 5 to 50 kg / ha depending upn crop type and
the amount of sulphur available in the soil. Therefore, apply sulphur according to the
requirement of crop.
Normally the requirement of sulphur is higher in oilseed crops than pulse crops.
According to an estimate, one tonne of cereals, pulses and oilseeds crops require 4, 8 and
12 kg sulphur respectively. This is the reason that oil seed crops are most responsive to
sulphur application.
As per availability, any source of sulphur source given in Table 1 can be used. However,
single super phosphate, gypsum, phospho-gypsum, pyrite, bentonite-sulphur are more
useful for sulphur nutrition.
Generally, the use of sulphur has been found to be the best in the form of fertilizer in
crops, but it can also be used at 25-30 days after sowing during weeding.
It should be remembered that in the condition of adequate soil moisture, sulphur fertilizers
should be broadcasted on the soil surface.
With the use of proper quantity of organic manures, sulphur deficiency can be overcome.
But high yielding crops require additional amount of sulphur, which can be fulfilled by
addition of fertilizers.
