Crops and cropping systems
The area sown and gross cropped area are 54.1 lakh ha and 90.5 lakh ha, respectively. The cropping
intensity of the state is 167%. Rice is the major crop in Kharif and Rabi. It is grown on 77% of the
area under cultivation. Apart from rice, other crops grown in the state are pulses, oil seeds, jute,
sugarcane, coconut and turmeric are important crops. The sate contributes one-tenth of the rice
production in India. Apart from food grains, various cash crops like jute, mesta, sugarcane, tobacco,
rubber, tea, coffee and turmeric are also cultivated in the state. Odisha stands fourth in the production
nd
of jute in the country and 2 in groundnut production.
Fertilizer consumption
The ratio of N:P:K use was 5.5:2.08:1. Total consumption of N, P 2O 5 and K 2O was 3,02,435, 1,30,889
and 61,023 tonnes, respectively, and consumption of ZnSO 4 was 3827.74 and 443.02 tonnes in Kharif
and Rabi season, respectively in 2016-17.
