substantial area is under lentil which is the most grown pulse crop in hills. Maize yields in hills
are much larger as compared to other regions. Same is true about the minor millets. Wheat and
paddy crops are generally grown under both rainfed and irrigated conditions. In Bhabhar and
Tarai region, the main crops in areas are wheat, rice, sugarcane, maize and pulses. Soybean
cultivation has picked up in these regions especially, in the Bhabar. gram and lentil are the major
pulse crops while toria is the major oilseed crop of the regions.
Fertilizer consumption
Total consumption of N, P 2O 5 and K 2O was 1,63,680, 29,172 and 9,277 tonnes, respectively in
2016-17. Consumption of ZnSO 4 was 1,100 and 1,092 tonnes in Kharif and Rabi season,
respectively. The cultivation on hill soils is mostly on terraced lands and generally organic by
default mostly. In Bhabar and Tarai soils, fertilizer use is very high. However, symptoms of
production fatigue have been noticed in rice-wheat cropping system mainly in the areas where
imbalanced use of fertilizers has been made. Due to practice of puddling before rice
transplanting, the soil structure has deteriorated bulk density of topsoil has increased and hardpan
in the subsoil has developed.
