is the third largest state for food grain production and contributes about 8.5% of the national
production. It holds third position in wheat production, whereas it occupies first position in
production of pulses and oilseed crops like gram and soybean. Among pulses, Madhya
Pradesh contributes about 15% of pea production in the country. It is the second largest state
for sorghum and lentil production and third largest state for maize and pigeon pea production.
With respect to spice production, Madhya Pradesh contributes 37% of garlic production of
the country and it is the second largest state in coriander production.
Fertilizer consumption
The increase in fertilizer consumption per ha of the state is about 80% in last decade but it is
less than the national average. The deficiency of secondary and micronutrients in soils of the
state is on rise because of enhanced area under intensive agriculture. Total consumption of N,
P 2O 5 and K 2O were 12,72,104, 6,17,761 and 91,972 tonnes, respectively, and consumption of
ZnSO 4 was 1123 and 351 tonnes in Kharif and Rabi season, respectively in 2016-17.
