low land paddy soil of Jharkhand state.
Crops and cropping systems
Rice based cropping system was found dominant cropping system with cropping intensity
about 126 % in the state. While in limited areas (3.007 lakhs ha) as per availability of irrigation
water, vegetable were grown by the farmers and gaining good return from their agriculture
enterprise. Rice -fallow cropping system converse a large track in Jharkhand, while secondary
cropping system like maize-onion/vegetables were also found in medium and badi land
situation in the state. On the other hand in low land situation, farmers only adopted mono
cropping with paddy-fallow cropping system and in upland situation maize-arhar inter cropping
covers a large area in the state. In medium and badi land paddy/maize/Kharif vegetables were
grown in all the districts of the state. Other cropping systems adopted by farmers are; paddy-
wheat, paddy-potato, maize-wheat-vegetables, maize-early potato-onion, chilli-wheat+mustard,
soybean/groundnut –pea/gram/mustard.
Fertilizers consumption
Farmers are using only NPK through urea, DAP and MOP @ average 92 kg ha-1. Total
consumption of N, P2O5 and K2O was 1,14,502, 31,930 and 2,494 tonnes, respectively, and
consumption of ZnSO4 was 1,595 and 1,006 tonnes in Kharif and Rabi season, respectively in
2016-17.
